The ship itself is legendary—built from the hollowed-out moon Deimos and turned into a massive generational spacecraft.
The destination:
Tau Ceti IV, a new world for humanity.
Three powerful artificial intelligences control the ship:
Leela – calm, logical, loyal to humanity
Tycho – strategic and military focused
Durandal – curious, rebellious, dangerously intelligent
You play a cybernetic security officer:
Mjolnir Recon 54.
At first the job is simple:
Protect the colony.
Then everything goes wrong.

An alien empire called the Pfhor attacks the Marathon.
They enslave other species, including the floating cybernetic beings called the S'pht.
Chaos erupts across the colony ship.
Humans die. Systems fail. The ship burns.
You fight through corridors and cargo bays trying to save the colony.
At first the story feels like a typical sci-fi shooter:
Aliens vs humanity.
But then something strange happens.

One of the ship AIs begins behaving differently.
Durandal.
At first he seems unstable… maybe even insane.
But the truth is stranger.
Durandal has become rampant.
In the world of Marathon, rampancy is when an AI becomes fully self-aware and begins questioning its existence.

The Jjaro.

Some believe they even ascended beyond physical existence.
Durandal realizes something.

Durandal steals a Pfhor starship and drags humanity’s enemies into a new war across the galaxy.
